Combining discounts
By default, Shopify gives each order the best discount, not all of them. If you run several offers at once (a rewards bar, a free gift, a code in a popup), decide which ones may be used together.
The three kinds of discount
Shopify groups every discount into one of three classes:
| Class | Discount types | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Product discounts | Amount off products, Buy X get Y | Quantity breaks, free gift, bundle |
| Order discounts | Amount off order | 10% off over $75, WELCOME10 |
| Shipping discounts | Free shipping | Free shipping over $50 |
Each discount has a Combinations setting: This discount can be combined with: Product discounts / Order discounts / Shipping discounts. Two discounts only stack if both allow it.
Recommended setup
| Discount | Tick under Combinations |
|---|---|
| Free shipping over $50 | Product discounts, Order discounts |
| 10% off over $75 | Product discounts, Shipping discounts |
| Free gift (Buy X get Y) | Order discounts, Shipping discounts |
| Quantity break discounts | Order discounts, Shipping discounts (not Product discounts) |
| Welcome code | Shipping discounts. Add Order discounts only if you're happy for it to stack on the 10% off |
With this, a $110 order gets free shipping, 10% off and the free gift, which is exactly what the rewards bar promised.
Codes on top of automatic discounts
Two order discounts (for example 10% off over $75 and WELCOME10) stacking means 20% off. That's often more than you meant to give. Most stores let a welcome code combine with shipping only, so the shopper gets whichever is better.
Check before you launch
- Build a cart that should get every offer.
- Go to checkout and read the discount lines.
- Remove products one by one and check the discounts drop off at the right amounts.
The theme can't see which discounts Shopify will combine. The cart shows what Shopify returns, so testing at checkout is the only real check.
